Graduate Profile

Last week in our Professional Learning Groups (PLuGS) we were looking at updating the school Graduate Profile. What is our vision of what a graduate of Tamaki College would like  when they leave school? What qualities, skills, competencies, experiences and qualifications would ready them for participating fully in society and working in the "real" world. What would make them lifelong learners?

The University of Auckland has 3 levels to its graduate profile:
Aspirations
Themes - generic capabilities
Capabilities - knowledge, skills, abilities & values

Edutopia suggests reflecting on:

  1. What are the most important cognitive capacities that should underpin your students' learning?
  2. Which personal competencies are valued most at home & school
  3. Which interpersonal competencies are most essential for collaboration and community in your school spaces.

Appraisal vs Certification

At a recent meeting with PCTs there seemed to be some confusion around evidence for appraisal and evidence for certification. Appraisal Appraisals are about   " improving teacher capability and student outcomes " (ERO). That is why the teacher's goals are linked to the vision and goals of the strategic plan of the school. Often there will be a school goal, a department goal and a personal goal. The appraisal process is  focused on valued outcomes for students, from goal-setting, evidence gathering and analysis, observations and professional discussions to the annual report (ERO). Attention can de directed to priority students and evidence from teachers' inquiries can form the basis of an appraisal discussion. So teachers choose their own goals within the guidelines & parameters set by the school. Digital Intensive Session 1

Today and for the next 8 Fridays I am on a Manaiakalani digital intensive. I am reasonably confident with digital technologies but, as we all know, there is always more to learn. Firstly we were given an introduction to the Manaiakalanai kaupapa and pedagogy. It was interesting hearing about the history of Manaiakalani and its early beginnings . Then we were into Google Docs. I work sometimes in Google Docs & sometimes in Word (which is apparently a no-no). Another no-no is NO underlining because that means a link and capitals mean you are shouting. But I did discover things like Find and Replace, Table of Contents and voice typing in which I just have to speak the words (and punctuation) and it writes for me! This will be a good thing to pass on to the PCTs I work with. As for my personal life, I don't think I really want my computer to be writing down everything I say.
